About Breast Augmentation Recovery
Breast augmentation recovery is important for preventing complications, protecting your long-term health, and ensuring results develop optimally. Dr. Grunberg will provide specific post-operative instructions, tailored to your procedure and medical history, that will guide you during your recovery. By following this plan, your tissues will settle and heal properly, allowing for long-lasting, stunning results. Although each patient varies, breast augmentation recovery typically takes four to six weeks for the body to heal and implants to settle into their final place.
Motiva Implants® and Preservé Breast Augmentation
Motiva implants are an innovative generation of implants that incorporate advanced safety features like a SmoothSilk® shell. This smooth shell helps prevent friction within the breast pocket—a trait that is important for minimizing the risk of capsular contracture. The smoothness of the implant, paired with the Preservé Breast Augmentation technique, work together to provide patients with a more efficient, shorter recovery in many cases. Preservé Breast Augmentation uses less invasive techniques, avoiding the tissue dissection required with traditional breast augmentation. Dr. Grunberg is proud to offer these innovations at her practice to put patient comfort and safety at the forefront.
Recovery Timeline
Week 1
In the first week after your breast augmentation procedure, swelling will peak, your chest will have bruises, and you will have tightness and soreness around your chest. These symptoms are normal and will gradually subside. You will need to prioritize rest and recovery during this time. As you rest, Dr. Grunberg recommends elevating your chest, shoulders, and head with pillows to promote circulation. It is also helpful to have someone stay with you to assist with any basic needs in the first few days post-surgery. A liquid diet and softer foods are helpful during the first post-procedure day, but you do not have to only eat soft foods throughout your recovery. If you are experiencing any discomfort, prescribed and certain over-the-counter medications can help. You must also not lift anything heavy, avoid raising your arms, and strictly sleep on your back while wearing your surgical bra at all times. However, taking short, light walks can help you recover and promote blood circulation and healthy healing. Recovery effects will be the most intense during this first week, but taking these precautionary steps and focusing on rest will help you remain comfortable as your tissues settle.
Weeks 2 to 3
During this time, you may resume moderate walks for as long as you feel comfortable. Dr. Grunberg will also advise you to begin scar therapy as bruising fades and discomfort subsides. If you have a desk job, Dr. Grunberg will allow you to return to work, and you may be able to resume light, lower-body cardio. However, you must avoid all upper-body and heavy lifting to prevent any stretching that can interfere with your results. This is also the stage at which you may be able to begin driving again, but you should be mindful about not operating a vehicle while taking prescribed pain medications. You should also be careful about your arm movements.
Weeks 4 to 6
Prominent swelling will greatly reduce during this time, and you will begin to feel like your normal self again. You will also be able to participate in light-to-moderate upper-body exercises and transition from your surgical bra to a soft, wireless one. Your implants will also begin to settle into a more natural-looking position, allowing you to begin visualizing your final results.
Weeks 7+
Once Dr. Grunberg grants you full clearance, you may resume strenuous activities and heavy lifting. You will notice your breasts continuing to soften and settle into their new shape. Your breasts will begin to appear noticeably softer and will shift downward into a more natural teardrop-shaped position. You will begin to see your final results appear, which might enhance your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Every patient’s recovery looks a little different, and patient experiences may vary.

How to Prepare for a Great Recovery
Optimizing your recovery begins with proper pre-procedure preparations. During your breast augmentation consultation, Dr. Grunberg will outline your responsibilities, specific to your medical history and treatment details.
In general, Dr. Grunberg recommends setting up a recovery station with pillows to keep you elevated while sleeping, as lying flat can increase swelling and discomfort. Before your procedure date, you must also stock your home with easy-to-prepare meals, plenty of water, and pick up any prescribed medications. (3) You must also pause taking blood-thinning medications or supplements, cease smoking and alcohol consumption at least four weeks prior, and avoid any anti-inflammatory medications. Gathering loose and comfortable clothing with simple buttons or a zipper to wear during your recovery is ideal to help you avoid lifting your arms, along with some slip-on shoes.
When To Seek Support During Recovery
During your breast augmentation recovery, you should seek immediate, emergency support if you are experiencing severe, worsening pain, signs of infection (like fever or red, hot skin), significant asymmetry, or if you are having difficulty breathing. If your symptoms are persistent, causing severe discomfort, or are unbearable, you may need to seek urgent assistance. Do this by visiting your nearest emergency care or by calling 911.
For less urgent concerns such as subtle discomfort, irritation, or pressing questions, our team is here to assist you in every way we can. You can reach us by calling the office at (210) 714-5390.
By openly communicating with Dr. Grunberg and our team, and by closely following your preparation and recovery instructions, significant complications should be rare. (4)

FAQ
How long does it take to recover from a breast augmentation?
Recovery from a breast augmentation typically lasts six to eight weeks, with results improving over the next few months.
When can I start exercising during my breast augmentation recovery?
You can begin light walking immediately to improve blood circulation; however, you must avoid strenuous exercises and heavy lifting for at least four weeks to allow the incisions and implants to heal.
What helps reduce swelling after breast augmentation?
Prescribed pain medication, consistently wearing your surgical bra, sleeping with your upper body elevated, and applying cold packs to your upper chest will help to decrease swelling.
Are there any possible complications during breast augmentation recovery?
If you follow the post-operation recovery guidelines from Dr. Grunberg, you can expect a smooth recovery experience. However, there is always a possibility of complications. Dr. Grunberg will state all risks clearly and outline how to avoid or remedy them.
Why is breast augmentation recovery important?
An optimal recovery process is necessary to ensure your body heals properly, minimize the risk of infections or complications, and allow you to achieve the best possible aesthetic outcomes.
Can I wear a bra during my breast augmentation recovery?
You will be given a special bra to wear during your recovery. Wear this bra as directed; other types of bras can irritate your breasts while they heal. The post-surgical bra is designed to support the breasts, protect incisions, and minimize swelling. Dr. Grunberg will let you know when you can go back to wearing your normal bras.
